刘毓中（1896-1982），字秀山，出生于陕西临潼一个梨园家庭，从小受父刘立杰（艺名木匠红）的熏陶，喜爱戏曲。16岁入陕西易俗社学艺，工须生。初因年龄大，嗓音差，不受重视，但勤学苦练，技艺大进。 一次剧社演出《宁武关》，主角因故误场，他自告奋勇化妆救场，一鸣惊人，赢得教练和观众的一致称赞，从此列入重点培养的对象，主角接撞而来，成为易俗社的台柱子。
刘毓中嗓音宽洪深厚，甘畅淋漓，善于运用大段唱腔反映人物的内心矛盾；他做派大方，身段讲究，文武兼备，尤善衰派老生。 他的代表剧目有《大报仇-祭灵》《卖画劈门》《烙碗计》《三滴血》《走雪》《三回头》《周文送女》等等。
京剧大师马连良称赞他是“衰派老生中的一绝”。故得“衰派一绝”之雅号！1921年，易俗社到汉口演出，欧阳予倩看了他的演出赞叹不已。1928年，他脱离易俗社担任秦钟社社长兼主演。1932年，秦钟社解体后，另建新声社。此后，曾在甘肃、宁夏演出多年。1946年回到西安，在三易、尚友等社搭班演出。1950年重返易俗社，担任主演。参加了《三滴血》《火焰驹》两部秦腔电影的拍摄，分扮演周仁瑞和黄璋。1952年参加全国第一界戏曲观摩演出大会上，他扮演《卖画劈门》中的白茂林、《游龟山》中的胡彦，获演员一等奖，1982年在西安病逝。
