，那时联合国正在中国抢救非遗项目，并且给予目连戏一定的经费支持。随即，文化部门进行第二次寻查，目的就是想知道除了东村以外，高淳还有没有目连戏传人。当汪士延根据一些线索找到一些老艺人时，他们已经不会唱了。
申报非遗传人难觅
老艺人不在了，汪士延心中一直惦记着阳腔目连戏传人，惟恐这一古老戏种“香火”中断。因此，只要一有线索，他就会不顾一切去寻找。
2005年，已经退休的汪士延又被县文化局返聘，负责非物质文化遗产保护相关的工作。当时，全县对管辖范围内的非遗项目进行拉网式普查，其中特别点名目连戏，但是半年时间过去了，也没有回音。
今年春天，高淳打算将“阳腔目连戏”作为非物质文化遗产向省市申报。申报非遗有个硬杠杠，就是必须有传人。无奈之下，县文化局只能姑且将省戏校能够查到名字的12位目连班学员作为传人申报上去。汪士延说，这样做令他感到尴尬，因为毕竟他们不是目连戏的正宗传人，也不会唱目连戏。
没有了传人，又何谈保护！盛行600年，目连戏真的在高淳画上了句号，从此消失了吗？汪士延用“大海捞针”来形容自己当时的心情。桠溪、东坝、固城、漆桥……汪士延和助手一口气走访了全县所有的镇，甚至连下面的行政村、大队都问过了，结果无一例外地失望。
惊喜！最后一个传人
上个礼拜，砖墙镇文化馆的退休干部王恩明带来一个好消息，他们村上有一个目连戏的正宗传人。
汪士延喜出望外，但是经历了多次打击的他没有亲眼见到，心情依然十分忐忑，于是联系好了之后，他立即冒着秋雨前去砖墙走访。
