黄梅戏的产生和发展，与农村农民和城市底层人民的生产生活方式息息相关，带有浓郁的乡土气息，曾被誉为“中国的乡村歌剧”。针对黄梅戏的现状，第十届全国人大代表、中国戏剧家协会副主席韩再芬在其博客中提出：“戏曲如果不改革，只有死路一条。”
“人们一直有个误区，似乎改革就是精减人员。”安庆市黄梅戏剧院院长韩笑龙认为，黄梅戏改革，体制是一方面，但更重要的是黄梅戏自身的改革与创新。
记者昨日从安庆市政协教科文卫委员会获悉，目前，安庆市有关黄梅戏的专业单位有黄梅戏学校、黄梅戏剧院、黄梅戏研究所、黄梅戏艺术杂志以及一个创作室和10个专业剧团，从业人员超过千人。
安庆市政协委员、安庆黄梅戏一团国家一级演员赵媛媛说：“庞大的机构设置，使得市、县政府每年对黄梅戏的投入基本只能用在人头费上。”这使得文化主管部门和单位领导很难把精力放到艺术生产上。安庆市副市长王强指出，安庆黄梅戏文艺团体改革势在必行，以适应市场经济需求建立起灵活机制，构建黄梅戏繁荣发展的新体制。
“黄梅戏的唱腔极具乡土风味，是黄梅戏不同于其它剧种而赢得大众喜爱的最本质东西。”安庆市黄梅戏剧院韩笑龙院长说，时下，一些黄梅戏剧团一味追求抒情、典雅的风格，丢掉了生活气息和泥土的芳香是很危险的。黄梅戏在发展过程中，不排斥吸收兄弟剧种的养料，关键是要化为自己的东西，保持黄梅戏的特色。
安徽黄梅戏学校陈中元副校长认为，黄梅戏艺术的创新，不仅要改造艺术形式，也要在艺术内容上体现时代精神。“黄梅戏现代戏的数量较少，而且质量上总是差一把火，这种状况需要改变。”如果剧本老是“公子小姐订终身”那一套，恐怕再新颖的表现手法也跟不上时代的脚步。
