，还找了熟人帮忙，因为他们觉得我年纪大了些，也不想要。熟人去对别人说，这娃儿岁数大，以后肯定自觉性强，老师才把我招进去了。
记：你怎么如此痴迷川剧？
田：其实当时我对川剧根本不了解，从小我感兴趣的是舞蹈，自己在家练过芭蕾。我就想从事艺术，至于当什么演员，心里没有标准。碰巧赶上最开始招生的就是川剧，我想，川剧也是演员，就去考了。后来也就一根筋似的，扭到考了。我这人最大的优点是执着，最大的缺点也是执着。中途我也试过考舞蹈，连名都没让我报，一量个头就淘汰了。不过说起来也很有意思，没想到后来我又连升三级，从区到四川川剧学校，然后留校，两次梅花奖都是在学校得的，最后还成为学校的副校长。现在新生入校，老师都喜欢把我的故事给学生讲一遍。
记：他们怎么讲？
田：你们要努力，不要看现在的条件差，原来田校长还三次都没有考上呢。只要努力，刻苦，一定有像她那样好的前景和好的结果。
下一个路口
记：你觉得他们说的努力、刻苦这两点，是一个客观描述吗？
田：还要加两个词：方向、坚持。我觉得一个人首先要明白自己想做什么。从小到大，我都知道我要做什么。在沙坪坝剧团后，我想，难道我一辈子就在这里吗？肯定不可能。于是我通过自己的努力调到重庆市川剧团了。但我知道我不会永远在这里，我预感到一定有个更好的未来在等待着我。我又知道自己条件差，所以也不是有太大的奢望。梅花奖，我从来没有奢望过。1989年去北京演出，我本来是候补队员，这也很让我兴奋了，结果到了北京，演员生病了，喊我替一场，但是他们说不会因此推荐我评选梅花奖。我觉得，只要能够演出就很好了。结果我非常放松。其他几个演员可能因为紧张，不停地出错。晚上一开会，领导改主意了，说要推田蔓莎。那是一个转折。我觉得自己可以朝更高的目标奋斗，我想去得梅花奖，我要去努力。于是我就给自己设计，怎么样才能达到目标，设计好后，我一步一步地去做，很困难都要坚持。后来很多事情我都是这样的。我给自己定了个目标，每年一定要做一件有意义的事情，同时也是超越自己的事情。这个要求一直保持到现在。
记：在下一个路口等待你的是什么？
田：我想我有很多条道路可以走，不存在改行、转行。我还是演员的时候，已经在做导演了，还在做导演的时候，已经学做制作人了，做制作人的时候，我已经学了管理了。有个香港导演说过，有些人一看就知道他的未来，有些人却不知道未来会怎么样，他说我是后者。
采访手记（5月24日上海）
田蔓莎说，很多人都觉得她不像个戏曲演员。
我知道她的意思。戏曲演员，可能是常年程式化训练和舞台演出的缘故，难免身上不会刻上一些矫揉造作的痕迹，像一只陈旧的描金花瓶。
但田蔓莎确实不像。首先她长得不漂亮，还不怎么涂脂抹粉，头发没什么样式，就剪短了，任它们顺滑而下。第一眼见到她时，我真不敢相信面前这个一身黑衣、个头不高、疑似家庭妇女的中年女性，会是中国戏曲界著名的田蔓莎。更不像戏曲演员的，是田蔓莎的作派：随意、热烈、简单，和她故乡重庆的那些女人一样，说起话来噼哩啪啦，笑起来没遮没拦，颇有些码头或者江湖的气息。
但只要谈起戏曲，田蔓莎一定是个演员，并且把我给迷住了。然后，觉得她变漂亮了。
